copper trading strategy

Since I started trading on eToro I have been looking for a fixed trading strategy, that I could apply "without thinking". While studying my copper trades, I realized, that on many days the daily copper candlesticks show long upper and lower shadow. So I figured it could be profitable to trade an a daily basis. In this post I describe the strategy and present first results.

Before I describe the strategy, it is important to know that I am working in a full time job. Thus I am not able to trade during the day. The only times I can check charts, open and close trades or reset stop loss limits is in the morning or in the evening. So for example it is not possible for me to find the lowest daily rate for a buy trade, by constantly monitoring the chart.

With this limitation I developed a trading strategy that can be applied in five steps:

Determine the current market trend of copper and thereby decide whether to open a buy or a sell trade.
Wait for the market opening and determine the opening rate.
Set an order 20 pips away from opening rate: In a bullish market 20 pips below opening, in a bearish market 20 pips above.
Set the stop loss 30 pips, take profit 60 pips away from order price.
Close trade at closing rate, when it was not closed by either stop loss or take profit.

The last step is probably the most difficult part of the strategy, since it is not possible to close exactly at the closing rate. Instead I have to close the trades earlier. Of course I try to find the most profitable time to do so, but "surprisingly" it doesn't always work. Furthermore, by applying the strategy trades are not opened every day. This week for example, only one trade was opened (today is Thursday).

Before I started applying this strategy on my eToro account I run a backtest. The result was a slow but steady profit over a several months period, so I decided to start right ahead - that was on December 19th 2016. Although the rules for the strategy are pretty simply, I managed to make mistakes. For example I once ordered a buy trade 20 pips above the opening rate (instead below). Unfortunately I placed the stop loss wrongly too and the market was bearish this day. Actual loss could have been small that day, but due to my mistake it was quite huge. Despite the mistakes I made, the strategy is slightly profitable (it looked much better when I described it in my last portfolio review, but I had a major drawback on Monday). The following chart shows the performance of the strategy. It furthermore compares my actual performance (including my mistakes) with the possible profit without mistake.

The red curve in the chart represents the possible performance of the strategy without my trading mistakes. For me it looks promising, as I could have had nearly 10% profit in just one month. Of course there is no guarantee that this goes on, but odds are good, so I will continue working with this strategy.

A friend told me she was into this online investing platform which turned out to be coin-bits and that it was going very well for her and she was making returns from it and I thought I could try it out as well. I initially invested a total of $105,000 over a period of 5 weeks. Yes it is possible to retrieve your stolen bitcoins. I never believed in bitcoin recovery because I was made to understand that it is not possible.
