When I rearranged my CopyTrading portfolio by the end of last year, I was confident to have chosen well performing traders. After eleven weeks of copying them, my portfolio reached an all time low of nearly -11%. Only two out of eight traders are profitable: @berrau and @cookie79. Unfortunately not enough to make up for the losses of the other six. Markets are currently very turbulent and the existing trading strategies can struggle in such unpredictable political and economical surroundings. Another aspect that might influence the performance is the massive increase of fees on certain trading instruments on eToro. Not only new, but also existing trades are affected. I will track the performance of my traders carefully and will consider another rearrangement of my portfolio.

After immense losses on my ManualTrading portfolio, I made some major changes to my trading approach:- reduce trades sizes: In the beginning I opened trades with up to 25% of my equity. If market was against me I lost a great portion of my equity. Now I am trading smaller trades, especially while I am still learning about the markets. Besides smaller overall losses I always have enough money to open another trade.
- reduce leverage: A big leverage can generate high gains but also high losses. Therefore I force myself to use a maximum leverage of 5.
- always set a fixed stop loss: In the past I opened trades with the standard stop loss setting. On eToro that is -50%. Now I always set a fixed stop loss in an area, where I believe my prediction for the market was wrong. Also, I don't widen my stop loss, even when I think the market will turn and go in my favor soon.
- don't open trades with a bad "risk-to-reward-ratio": Before opening a trade, I define a stop loss and a take profit limit based on my chart analysis. With these limits I calculate the "risk-to-reward-ratio" and will only open the trade when it is better than 1:2.
- trading logbook: In order to better learn from my past trades, I document every trade in a trading logbook. I write down which signals I used for my decision and how I chose my trading limits. This takes quite some time but offers huge possibilities to analyse my trades. Some experienced traders even say this is mandatory to become a successful trader.
In parallel I am still applying my trading strategy on copper. After some losses in the past weeks, I got back on track. Just when I was considering to quit I had the first trade that hit take profit. Plus I managed to trade without any "application mistakes" for four weeks now, keeping the difference between my realized and my theoretical profits constant:
If you read this blog regularly you have surely read that I started working with Metatrader 5. For now I am still getting familiar with the platform and the possibilities it offers. Therefore I am not trading with real money but only in a demo account. With the help of this blog post in the MQL5 community I managed to program my first trading robot. I still need to work on the strategy to find a profitable setup. Once I am there I will give you an update on that.
